Amazon Verified Purchase( What's this?)
This review is from: Gaggia 90851 Platinum Swing Automatic Espresso Machine with Milk Island, Silver and Black (Kitchen)
I had a problem with the first machine I received. It didn't work, and had to go back. The second machine worked but then gave me false error messages along the way. I sent that one back as well.

The machine looks better in the picture, but when you get it out of the box, it's made almost entirely of plastic. Although there are settings to change the way it makes your coffee, I found all of them to do very little with the final cup. I came away thinking it was too much money for an automated machine that could break very easily. The coffee itself was fine, and the frothing was average (the Milk Island was a total waste of time- if you can't hold up a pitcher to the steam nozzle, why bother having a cappuccino machine?)

Don't buy an automatic espresso machine. Too much to go wrong for a very average cup of Joe. Do a little work with a semi-automatic and you'll be much happier.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great espresso and coffee, January 17, 2012
This review is from: Gaggia 90851 Platinum Swing Automatic Espresso Machine with Milk Island, Silver and Black (Kitchen)
My parents have had a Gaggia Titanium for several years. It has been going strong for 4+ years. I finally decided to make the switch from a Keurig to a superautomatic and so far I am glad I did.
The machine makes great espressos and the milk island is suprisingly useful. Setup didn't take long. Just make sure to "activate" the water filter. There is a setting in the menu to activate the water filter. The machine will pump water through the steam wand and then you are good to go.
This machine is much quieter than the Titanium model and I like the design better. Small footprint for a superautomatic and nice modern display screen.
You have three drink programs - espresso, coffee, and long coffee. You set how much water you want to brew in each cycle when you setup the machine and then choose one of the three when you want to brew. You can adjust the amount of coffee used in each cycle by using the bean button (mild, medium, and strong). You can also adjust how... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars A little bit of Switzerland, September 29, 2009

I lived in Switzerland for four years and while there my standards for coffee changed quite dramatically. Hence on my return to the US my first purchase was this machine. While I was living in Switzerland I went through two Nespresso machines which were a pain in the patootie to keep descaled and operational. Both were hosed by the time I left. I was impressed with the Jura machines owned by Swiss friends and neighbors. I have had this machine for 8 months now and have never regretted my decision to purchase it. It is smart enough to tell you when it needs cleaning and the instructions (unlike the Nespresso machinges I have owned) were very clear. Cleaning is automated and a snap to accomplish. Just initiate the program and it will be through by the time you finish doing the breakfast dishes. The one downside is that it is quite large so you will have to devote quite a bit of counter space to it and if you are big coffee drinkers you will also have to fill the rather small water... 3.0 out of 5 stars Great coffee, some flaws with the machine, April 10, 2010
By
This review is from: Jura-Capresso 13421 ENA4 Automatic Coffee and Espresso Center, Ristretto Black/Platinum Front (Kitchen)
I've had the jura for 4 months now and previously owned a gaggia automatic expresso machine and have made over 200 lattes so far with the jura. I love the small size of the jura, the coffee is great once you adjust it to suit your tastes. i like the fact that everything is automated and being warned stops me running out of water half way through an expresso like i did with the gaggia. it is easy to clean and is a great machine.

There are two flaws which is why I'm giving this 3 stars. Firstly the milk frothing wand comes lose and when it does sprays milk and stream over nearby surfaces and you. At first this happened rarely and i put it down to me not having the wand seated securely, however after 4 months of making lattes i check before every coffee and the wand will no longer stay on long enough to do enough milk for one latte. this is very annoying and potentially dangerous as steam and hot milk tend to go over your hand. The second problem is the water tank,... Read more

After weeks of research we ended up selecting the Jura-Capresso ENA 4.

I was a bit skeptical that this small little super automatic could really replace our larger manual and brew quality espresso. I went to a local retailer and was fortunate enough to be able to use a demo unit. I was amazed by how simple and intuitive the ENA 4 is to use; while at the same time provides a level of flexibility and control well beyond my expectations.

The Jura-Capresso site has some great video demos as well as other info that is worth checking out.
[...]

If you're looking for a super automatic, I highly recommend you take a look at the ENA. Our unit has exceeded our expectations. Great espresso and lattes!

5.0 out of 5 stars A how-to, for the curious, September 25, 2006

This review is from: Bialetti 6799 Moka Express 3-Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker (Kitchen)
I got my Bialetti 6-cup about a week and a half ago. It took me a while to learn all the tricks of the trade, so I thought I'd piece it together here.

1. Rinse out the pot, preferably with warm water and not with any abrasive cloth.

2. Fill the bottom of the pot with water to the line. If you go over it, the pot might explode. Seriously.

3. Fill the middle filter with ground espresso roast (dark) beans. Grind them a little bit finer then auto drip grind, to about the grain of fine sand. Level off the filter, and put it in the pot.

4. Screw on the top hard. Don't use the handle to screw it, because it could snap off.

5. My stove goes LO, 1, 2, ... 8, 9, HI; I usually set it between 3 and 5. It takes 5-ish minutes to finish. Take it off the stove when you hear it gurgling and sputtering.

Things I've learned:
*If it's going to be mainly you drinking the espresso, consider a 3-cup. I usually make a double... Read more

Unless you are ready to be ruined for any other coffee, and the three cup size will not be big enough! Decades of my life wasted. I've discovered real coffee so late in life, my only lament about buying this espresso pot is the tears shed over all those mornings I *could* have had REAL coffee...

Easy to use, a little time consuming to clean, handsome enough to leave out as a decoration. Unscrew the bottom, fill the bottom half with cold water, fill the little filter cup with fine ground coffee (note that "espresso" is a grind, not a roast), screw it back together, and put it on the stove top. In five minutes or less, you have the most incredible coffee ever. With the internal parts, it is not hard to clean, but time consuming, especially given the time it takes to cool off enough to take apart (the other reason to get a bigger one, the little one is too slow to reload).

The styling is a little retro, but handsome enough to lend a kitchen a quirky flair... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars The only drawback? You'll need a larger one for company..., August 3, 2005
By
This review is from: Bialetti 6799 Moka Express 3-Cup Stovetop Espresso Maker (Kitchen)
Recently picked up a 3 cup Bialetti Moka Express while on holiday and couldn't wait to get it home and broken in. I've tried stove-top Italian coffee makers before, and this model has not disappointed.

Sturdy and well made, this unit only has about five parts, all of them metal or heavy-duty plastic so very little can go wrong. This should last ages if properly cared for.

Just remember to keep it simple; fresh, cold water in the lower chamber (stopping *before* you get to the brass outlet valve) and fill the grounds basket with an espresso grind coffee (good excuse to buy more coffee) without packing it too tightly. Place on your stovetop ring and don't go anywhere. Wait a few minutes, and you have an excellent espresso to start the day or to add to steamed milk after dinner. I can't wait to have some with a cigar this weekend. I've been trying some Cafe Bustello the last few mornings and it's been great. Yeah, I know it's canned, but so are most of the... Read more
